The Invasion of Divinity

The Invasion of Divinity

The series we will be doing for Advent and Christmas 2011 is called The Invasion of Divinity.   The world was dark with sin and needed an invasion of Divinity to bring it light and save it.  This series looks at how this invasion of divinity was promised, how it was prepared for, how it was born of a virgin, how there was an attempt to prevent it, and finally how it was a premiere of the plan of redemption.

Passage: Mark 1:1-13
Duration: 34 mins
A lot of our focus in this Christmas series has been on the person of Jesus. Mark’s gospel, though not a telling of the specific events of Jesus’s birth, clearly teaches us that the Invasion of Divinity was not just about Jesus, but was actually all part of a beautiful dance between the three persons of the Trinity – God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This Trinity is based on a perfect love relationship between these three Persons, and it is out of this kind of love that Jesus, in obedience to the voice of the Father and with the power of the Spirit, came to this earth to save us. Along with the joy surrounding Christmas we have to acknowledge that there are some very unpleasant chapters in the Christmas story too, such as the murder of all the babies in Bethlehem when King Herod heard about the birth of a new King. The Invasion of Divinity does not happen without opposition from the forces of evil, which unfortunately will inevitably result in some suffering. But, as is always the case, God will prevail over any opposition and there will be victory!

Passage: Luke 1:26-56
Duration: 37 mins
Do you ever have doubts about the validity of the Christmas story? Do you find yourself asking, “How can this be?” This message looks first at how incredible it is that in the Christmas story we find God coming to be present with us, and what that really means for us; and then it goes on to instruct us how to deal with any doubts that we may have regarding the truths of this amazing event so that the story gets into our heads, and more importantly, into our hearts. The Invasion of Divinity marked the institution of a new pathway to salvation – one of receiving of grace rather than meeting requirements of a law. But this radical change in pathways required some preparation, which God provided through John the Baptist. John’s ministry demonstrated that the pathway to salvation no longer required sacrifices in the temple, but simply repenting and opening one’s heart to receive Christ. This sermon is the first of a series of messages that encompasses both Advent and Christmas and looks at how the darkness of this world could only be righted by an Invasion of Divinity.
