The Apostles’ Creed states “We believe…one holy catholic [or universal] church….” In this we understand that Christ’s church extends around the world and throughout the ages. All of His believers together are one church, one body. One way in which we express that is by way of the sensitivity with which symbols are displayed in our worship services. As much as is possible, we try to show unity with fellow believers around the world—in many different countries and various cultures. No matter what might be the citizenship of any of Trinity’s worshippers gathered on any particular Lord’s Day, we demonstrate that we all are united around the cross of Christ, His table, His baptism, not around a national emblem.
Thus, the Trinity council has a policy that in our worship services we do not place emphasis on our national holidays or their symbols... For many years we have had the policy of limiting political flags and patriotic music as much as possible.
“The American flag may be placed in the front of the Worship Center on Memorial Day weekend (one Sunday only) and July 4 weekend (one Sunday only). All other times the flag is to be in the commons area or closet.” [adopted in 2002 and affirmed in 2004]
This in no way diminishes recognition of patriotism. We simply do not believe it appropriate to mix with our worship services. We seek to be sensitive to our visitors and guests who come from other countries. We seek to demonstrate our unity with Christians around the world. Our emphasis is on unity and brotherhood shown in love and inclusiveness. In our worship services we are all united and focused only on our Lord Jesus Christ and His sacrifice.
Since some time has passed since this was presented, we wanted you to understand our policy on this sensitive matter. In love and compassion we trust that you understand why Trinity seeks to follow this path.
